Mount Whitney at an elevation of 14,505 feet is the highest peak in the continental United States. The Mount Whitney Trail is the most popular route to the summit. It begins at Whitney Portal elevation 8,360 feet. The hike to the summit is about 11 miles with an elevation gain over 6,000 feet. Most hikers complete the strenuous trip in two days.
